Safety

    • RIFR improved by 16% to 4.19 per million hours worked.
  • In PNG:
    • FIFR declined to 0.2 per million hours worked.
    • LTIFR down to 0.7 per million hours worked.
  • Illegal miners remain a critical area of concern.

Occupational health and safety

  • In South Africa:
    • 57 045 medical surveillance examinations conducted in FY10.
    • 442 cases of NIHL cases identified and submitted for compensation.
    • 881 cases of silicosis identified and submitted for compensation.
    • 1 302 TB cases diagnosed.
    • A total of 3 226 employees enrolled in HAART programme.
  • In PNG:
    • 19 389 health contacts were made at all the PNG medical centres (FY09: 23 055).

Labour practices and human rights

  • Total of 42 597 people employed at 30 June 2010, 36 893 full-time employees and 5 704 contractors.
  • Group turnover of 14%.
  • 30 747 employees received some form of training at a cost of R225 million.
  • Foreign labour made up 28% of South African workforce.
  • In South Africa:
    • HDSAs made up 40% of management.
    • 12% women in mining.
  • In PNG, women made up 14% of the workforce.
  • 88% of the South African workforce is unionised or covered by collective bargaining agreements.

Community

  • In South Africa R58.8 million spent on LED projects and R23.1 million on CSR projects.
  • In PNG, US$1.1 million was spent on community programmes.

Environment

  • No environmental fines or sanctions in FY10.
  • Good progress towards ISO14001 implementation in South Africa.
  • Total water used for primary activities of 44 338 781m³ in South Africa and 1 843 000m³ in PNG.
  • Electrical energy usage of 3 659 376MWh for the South African operations. Total energy consumption generated from diesel in PNG of 105 015MWh.
  • Total of 7 884 tonnes of cyanide used in South Africa and 3 000 tonnes in PNG.
  • Total scope 1 and 2 emissions in South Africa of 4 402 675 tonnes CO2e and 128 371 tonnes CO2e in PNG.
